In reply to Steve Wright's letter of 23rd March regarding concerns over the availability of fuel and the implications of recent price rises, the LPHCA has received a positive response (copy of letter below) from Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Lilian Greenwood MP.
Importantly, it sets out the clear message that in 2025 around 90% of the crude oil refined in the UK was imported, and only around 1% of that came from the Middle East. Petrol stations in the UK are well-stocked so drivers should fill up as normal. It also helpfully notes that licensing authorities are responsible for setting taxi fares, and can amend them in response to changes in costs facing the sector.
That good news on supply does not help the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) sector, however, who are on contracted rates and it is predominantly fuel price that concerns them.
LPHCA representatives had a Teams call last Wednesday afternoon with senior officials to discuss fuel and we have been assured, as the letter from the Minister confirms, that the government will continue to plan for all eventualities and are monitoring the situation closely.
