The LPHCA has prevented the mandating of CCTV in many areas for our members. Our current policy is not against CCTV; it is against the mandating of CCTV in all PHVs. Please use this forum to share your thoughts and information, which will help us formulate our strategy and policy.

Whilst I can see how CCTV can help prevent and detect crime, I can see that mandating CCTV in all Private Hire vehicles shows a lack of understanding of what a private hire vehicle is. The clue is in the name. My clients hire a PRIVATE hire vehicle, and whilst it might be expected to have CCTV in a private hire vehicle (similar to bus and train), I personally would NOT want to have CCTV mandated in a private hire Chauffeur driven vehicle (although it sits under “Private Hire” licence). Maybe Private hire could include three sub-categories 1)standard private hire, 2)restricted licence private hire – suitable for school runs and SEND journeys, and 3)executive chauffeur vehicles.

We will be conducting a new poll on this, as we have battled on behalf of members to prevent CCTV being mandated successfully in many areas, including London.
